Budongo Forest lies on the escarpment northeast of Lake Albert. The nearest large town is Masindi, although much of the land surrounding the forest is now used for cultivation, residential development, villages, schools, and markets.

East African Mahogany and Chimpanzees

Budongo is famous for its historical abundance of East African Mahogany trees, which once covered vast areas of the forest. Today, an exceptionally large Mahogany tree still stands, soaring over 80 meters tall with a circumference of 20 meters. The forest also serves as a critical habitat for chimpanzees, supporting around 800 individuals.

Budongo Forest is contiguous with Kaniyo Pabidi Forest, creating an expansive natural environment that shelters a wide range of primates and other wildlife species.
